Lecture: Digital Imagery and Children
Questions to consider today:
1. Is the ‘medium the message’?
2. How far can anyone trust sources we see?
3. How much control do parents/teachers have?
4. What can parents/teachers do to ensure children understand ‘imagery’?
5. How do children make sense of it all?
Useful definition of the phrase ‘The Medium is the Message’ – from Wikipedia
Lecture handout: Article excerpt from “The Playboy Interview: Marshall McLuhan”, ‘A candid conversation with the high priest of popcult and metaphysician of media.’ Playboy Magazine, March 1969. (accessed on 1 December 2010 from NextNature )
Article questions to consider:
1. Based on your reading and from the video clips, what does McLuhan mean
by ‘the medium is the message’?
2. What are your reflections about this phrase?
3. Media analyst Douglas Rushkoff, author of Life INC, suggests that in the
case of the internet, the “product online is not the content, the product
online is you.” How is this the same thing, and how not, as “The Medium is
the Message”? (Recall that McLuhan said that in electronic media the
content was the audience.)
4. What does ‘the medium is the message’ this mean in the context of
images?
5. Adults need to think carefully about the images that children are exposed
to – think about the messages within the images. Reflections?
